When (and how) to steam your wedding dress

There are a couple of ways to steam your wedding gown before the wedding.

Your wedding day is approaching and you’ve picked up your wedding gown from the shop. The gown has been hanging on a hanger and likely has been smashed in a garment bag and in a closet. The dress will be full of wrinkles but don’t worry – this is common and there are some easy ways to quickly remove wrinkles from your dress. You don’t need to take it somewhere or spend a lot of money to get rid of wrinkles. There are a couple of ways to steam your wedding gown before the wedding. You don’t want to steam it too early because it can get wrinkled again.

A garment steamer is a good way to steam the wrinkles out of clothes. It is a small, portable unit that plugs in. You fill it with water and it heats up to create steam. Steaming can also be done with a powerful clothes iron if it has a steam setting on it. Fill the iron with water to the indicated level and turn it on to the steam setting. Once the iron is heated you can hold it up next to the dress and press the steam button. The iron will emit bursts of steam. You can use it in sections on the dress until the entire dress is complete. Be careful not to get the iron too close to the fabric because you don’t want to risk melting any delicate materials or lace. Steam can also make water marks on garments if too much water comes out at once so you must also be careful for that problem.

Of course, steamers and irons can be expensive so if you don’t have one don’t worry. You won’t need to go out and buy one. Instead, you can use the shower to steam your dress. This is an easy and fast way to get rid of wrinkles in your wedding dress. In fact, it’s rather foolproof. To use the shower to steam your dress you’ll need to have a place to hang the dress in the bathroom. You can hang it on the shower rod if it won’t be near the water. Turn on the shower to the hottest setting and close the door. Leave the room to steam for 15 to 30 minutes. If there are stubborn wrinkles you’ll need to leave it closer to 30 minutes. The wrinkles will simply smooth away without any further action. After steaming your dress keep it hung up without touching any other clothing so it isn’t smashed between items where it can become more wrinkled. You can steam your dress several days ahead of time or even on the morning of your wedding.
