Important tips to keep in mind when thinking about your wedding cake.

Wedding cake do’s and don’ts

The wedding cake is a tradition that dates back hundreds of years. Today a wedding cake (or some variation) is a part of every wedding reception. One of the most popular photos that you’ll keep is of the bride and groom cutting the wedding cake and feeding it to each other. Wedding cakes may be ornate or plain, large or small. There are some important do’s and don’ts to keep in mind when thinking about your wedding cake.

DO choose a cake that is large enough to feed everyone at the reception. Bakeries are very good at providing the right size for the number of guests. If you’re between sizes, always opt for the larger of the choices.

DON’T order a cake that can’t withstand heat and light. Your cake will be displayed at your reception for several hours so it’s best to pick frostings and fillings that don’t need refrigeration.

DON’T feel that you must choose a traditional wedding cake. Today’s brides are also considering other options such as cake pops and cupcakes. These are great alternatives. If you do choose one of these alternatives you can still order a small wedding cake where you can display your topper. You’ll also be able to keep this cake for your first anniversary.

DO consider using the wedding cake as a dessert. This may save you some money on the price of dinner while giving your guests a yummy alternative to ice cream or sherbet. You may also want to add a sweets table to the reception to give your friends and family members additional choices.

DO choose a wedding cake that you adore. If you like you can match the frosting to your bridal colours – but you don’t have to. It’s your wedding and you can choose the cake that you like the best.

DO consider a groom’s cake. This new tradition is a cake that is designed and decorated specifically with the groom in mind. It’s usually smaller in size than the traditional wedding cake and may or may not be eaten.

DON’T get caught without a backup plan. If you run into problems with the cake it’s a good idea to have some type of idea what to do. While unlikely, you do want to consider what to do in case of a cake emergency.

DON’T forget to make arrangements for cutting and distributing the cake. Some reception venues will provide waiters to cut and serve the cake if you like. If you prefer, you can have the cake sliced and boxed for guests to take with them.
