How to choose the perfect wedding rings

It’s one of the most moving lines at the wedding: “With this ring, I thee wed.” But while the ring is a symbol of your love and commitment to each other, it’s also a piece of jewellery you’re going to wear every day for the rest of your life.  That means you’d better like it.

There are a number of things to keep in mind when choosing wedding rings for both yourself and your spouse, including:

1. Your budget: As much as you might want a ring full of bling, it’s first important to set a budget for the rings. The more diamonds a ring has, the more it will cost. Similarly, platinum costs more than yellow or white gold, so keep that in mind before you go shopping.

2. Your style: There are plenty of aesthetics to consider when choosing your wedding ring. Do you want white metal (i.e. white gold, platinum) or yellow? Do you want diamonds or other gemstones? How thick do you want the band? Do you want any detail on the band? These choices will help you narrow down the search for the perfect ring and you won’t have to waste time going from jewellery store to jewellery store.

3. Your engagement ring: Do you want to wear your wedding band and engagement ring together or separately? If you want to wear them together, you should look for a wedding ring that complements your engagement ring. And remember, traditionally, your wedding ring goes on your finger first, followed by the engagement ring. This is because the wedding ring – the symbol of your marriage – should be closest to your heart.

4. Your spouse: Do you want your wedding ring to coordinate with your spouse’s ring? Some couples want matching rings, while others prefer just to find a ring they each like. If you decide on matching rings, be aware that your options may be limited, as men’s rings tend not to have as many design options as women’s rings.

5. Your message: Do you want to engrave your rings inside the band? Many couples choose to engrave wedding dates, initials and even romantic messages inside the rings. If you do choose to go that route, allow extra time for delivery, and make sure your budget covers the extra costs.
